Research News:
· linoleic acid, LA, 18:2n6, linoleate
o Essential fatty acid from nut, seed, and vegetable oils, especially safflower
oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, walnut oil, sesame seed oil, LA is the parent
fatty acid of the omega-6 class,
o EPA and DHA decrease conversion of linoleate to arachidonate; high doses of LA
inhibit conversion of alpha-LNA to EPA and DHA due to competition for delta-6
desaturase
o Hydrogenated “trans” forms are common in processed and fried foods,
o LA favors oxidative modification of LDL cholesterol, increases platelet
response to aggregation, and suppresses the immune system.[1] Adipose LA levels
are positively correlated with CVD.
o Promotes metastasis and inflammation.
o LA is the predominant PUFA in US diets. Daily intake of linoleic acid is
approximately 10 grams, only a small amount of which is converted to
arachidonate.[2]
o LA effectively lowers cholesterol, but otherwise this fatty acid is
consistently associated with exacerbation of cancer and inflammation and thus
should be avoided.
o LA undergoes oxidative metabolism by 15-lipoxygenase-1 to form 13-S-HODE[3],
and this is discussed in greater detail later in this section
