GLA

Research News: · gamma (g)-linolenic acid, GLA, 18:3n6, gamma-linolenate

o Formation is increased from linoleic acid by vitamin C[1]

o Found in evening primrose oil, borage seed oil, hemp seed oil, and black currant seed oil

o GLA restores action of delta-6-desaturase (D6D) in aging animals, suggesting that GLA intake should increase in older rats and humans

o Useful in eczema for improvement in skin health and in diabetes especially for improvement in nerve function

o GLA may facilitate the conversion of ALA to EPA and perhaps to DHA.

o In patients who respond to GLA supplementation, we can reasonably hypothesize that they have impaired D-6-Desaturase activity since most patients have adequate dietary intake of LA. Therefore, by extension, we can suppose that their conversion of ALA to EPA is likewise impaired and that they may benefit from EPA supplementation.

o Formation of GLA from LA is inhibited by EPA and other n-3 EFAs[2]

o Overall, the weight of the research suggests that supplementation with GLA does lead to modest increases in arachidonate, despite the slow conversion of DGLA to arachidonate by delta-5 desaturase. Coadministration of EPA with GLA prevents any rise in arachidonate, as discussed later in this section.
