Major Fatty Acids have biologic actions
|
|
Research News:
Fatty acids serve three primary biologic functions: 1) as cell
membrane components that modulate membrane pliability and receptor sensitivity,
2) as precursors to potent biologic regulators such as prostaglandins and
leukotrienes, and 3) as modulators of gene expression. Each fatty acid must be
either provided by diet or manufactured from enzymatic conversion of its
predecessor in order to carry out its physiologic role. Deficiency of any fatty
acid results in impairment of physiologic function. These impairments begin
subtly and often go unrecognized by clinicians who may then erroneously employ
pharmacologic and surgical interventions to alleviate diseases that originate
from deficiencies of fatty acids and other nutrients.
