Fatty acid "families"
|
Research News:
The two main families of bioactive fatty acids are the omega-3 and
omega-6 families. These families have generally opposing effects to each other
and therefore the quantitative balance of these fatty acids serves to dictate
the body’s ability to establish and retain homeostasis with regard to the
modulation of cellular function in general and the production of thromboxanes,
leukotrienes, and prostaglandins in particular.[1] With an excess of n-6 fatty
acids and a deficiency of n-3 fatty acids, the human body fails to function
optimally and the clinical result is an increase in the prevalence and severity
of clinical diseases associated with imbalanced gene expression, cell membrane
function, and eicosanoid production—namely cancer, heart disease, diabetes,
arthritis, allergy, autoimmune diseases, depression, bipolar disorder,
schizophrenia, and the long list of “diseases of Western civilization.”[2]
